Designer-manufacturer Jessica McClintock has carved out a niche for her romantic garments that cuts cleanly across generational lines.
Every woman who’s attended a prom, walked down the aisle or donned a bridesmaid’s or mother-of-the-bride dress within the past 30 years is familiar with Jessica McIntosh’s exquisite social occasion and bridal dresses. The Jessica McClintock manufacturer - has built a veritable fashion institution in the years since the 1969 launch of their company, and has gained a wide following by continually redefining classic elegance.
It's a challenge Jessica McClintock, Inc. seems to have mastered. The manufacture's four formalwear collections Jessica McClintock Signature, Jessica McClintock Bridal, Jessica McClintock for Girls, Scott McClintock and Gunne Sax - sell in the company's own 26 retail shops and five outlet locations, as well as in major department stores and specialty retailers across the country. Design and manufacturing are handled at the company''s corporate headquarters in San Francisco houses design, raw materials inspection and storage functions.

Limited cutting, accomplished with Gerber automatic equipment, also takes place at the corporate building. "We have a Gerber pattern- and marker-making system, and all our pattern makers are linked up to it in order to streamline the whole design process," relates Dilip Parekh, the company''s CFO. Parekh explains that, although most of the cutting is done by outside contractors, the company operates an in-house Gerber automatic cutter for some multi-ply production cuts. All manufacturing is contracted out to Bay Area sources, which the company''s inspectors regularly monitor for compliance. Currently, the company maintains all manufacturing in the United States due to short production runs and the critical need to respond immediately to changes in the fashion industry. Finished goods approximately 35,000 units per week of complicated formal dresses - are sent to the company's 240,000-sq.ft. distribution center in south San Francisco for later shipment to the company's own stores and other retail accounts.

Though Jessica McCIintock's special occasion product category has shielded the company somewhat from the extreme price pressure crushing the rest of the apparel industry, the formalwear manufacturer remains cognizant of production costs and expense issues.
